Biomachine Olfaction
We have built an Electronic Nose that:
• Detects cancer through urine scent
• Detects chemical threats, explosives, drugs
• Can be trained to detect anything with a scent, just like a dog!
RealNose Demonstrates Prototype Alongside Medical Detection Dogs at Clarence House for Her Majesty The Queen
On Tuesday, May 12th, RealNose Founder and CSO, Dr. Andreas Mershin, and the entire RealNose team joined Dr. Claire Guest and Medical Detection Dogs (MDD) at Clarence House for a landmark event hosted by Her Majesty The Queen, Patron of MDD since 2014. The presentation highlighted the powerful synergy between biological and machine olfaction, featuring a live demonstration where medical detection dogs identified cancer-associated scent signatures, followed by a showcase of the RealNose GPCR-sensitized electronic nose. This prototype, trained on the same prostate cancer urine samples used to calibrate the world’s most effective canine detectors, represents the first step in translating extraordinary biological diagnostic abilities into scalable medical technology. Dr. Mershin had the honor of placing the device in The Queen’s hands to demonstrate its detection capabilities, while discussing the future of machine olfaction with Her Majesty alongside MDD CEO and founder Dr. Claire Guest. The entire RealNose team, Nikolas Stefanou, Achilleas Kotsis, Zoi Kountouri, and Dr. Shannon Johnson, were thrilled to attend as The Queen emphasized that "nature will always lead the way" expressing an interest in the continued evolution of the RealNose platform. Team delighted in interacting with trustees and many other guests who asked deep and interesting questions about RealNose’s next steps and move towards wider testing targeting eventual adoption by the NHS and other health systems.

RealNose is pioneering machine olfaction, integrating AI and bionanotechnology to detect scent signatures with speed and precision.
Spun out from DARPA-funded MIT research, with additional multi-year support from GlaxoSmithKline and the Prostate Cancer Foundation, our platform delivers non-invasive, highly accurate diagnostics by creating real-time, VOC-conferred signatures.
Applications:
Prostate cancer detection from urine – Our first medical application is a scalable alternative to invasive prostate cancer diagnostics, first as a screening tool competing with PSA and eventually trained to determine Gleason scores with superior accuracy -RealNose.ai were recruited for NYU Endless Frontier Labs 2024-2025 accelerator
Security & Defense – Tracking (hazards, narcotics, humans), drone navigation asynchronous comms and swarming -RealNose was selected as NATO DIANA Innovators 2025
Biopharma & Manufacturing – inline monitoring of quality and contamination
Consumer & IoT – Bringing scent recognition to smartphones, wearables etc.
Machine olfaction is the next leap in digital sensing. RealNose is making it possible.

MIT Tough Tech Demo Day at The Engine
RealNose was selected to present at Tough Tech Demo Day 2025, hosted by MIT’s The Engine and its partners. We demonstrated our advanced biosensor technology to a curated audience of deep-tech investors, industry executives, and ecosystem leaders focused on breakthrough scientific innovation and startup funding. The team met fellow co-founders and connected with several potential investors and tech partners in the drones and robotics sectors.
CBRN Operational Exercise in Camp Suffield, Alberta, Canada.
RealNose took part in CBRN Operational Exercise “Precise Response" at Camp Suffield, Alberta, Canada in 2025. The training brought together experts and partners to strengthen preparedness against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. Nikolas, Andreas and a handheld RealNose prototype attended within 50m of real, live chemical and biological agents. RealNose was also a participant in CBRN exercise CBOA SCOUT 2026.
